u23 World Championships

toby barnes - 21st

Saturday 30th January 2021

This past weekend saw the 2021 UCI World Cyclocross Championships happen in Ostend, Belgium. Tight Covid restrictions made for a different looking Worlds than we are used to seeing, but our very own Toby Barnes was on the start line of the Men's U23 race, the first race of the Championships.

On a course that would be unfamiliar to most UK riders, with long sand sections and large bridges, Toby was able to finish his season on a high with a strong 21st position.

A race that was once again dominated by the Dutch and Belgian riders, saw the GB trio of Ben Turner, Thomas Mein and Toby Barnes take the 3rd spot in the team classification. To back up a strong solo performance, being a counter in the GB's podium team made all the more for a better weekend.

''Racing my first world championships was an amazing experience. I had been aiming for this race for a long time so I’m really happy to have had a strong ride on such a tough course with lots of sand sections which we don’t get in the UK races. A brilliant way to end my season.''

-Toby Barnes-

''Although there have been few races, it has felt like a long season to all with racing starting in September and continuing to now. Toby has been able to use this season to really show himself on both the National and International stage and prove he is worthy to represent Great Britain in Cyclocross. World's was a really difficult, and intriguing course, but it was great to see all the planning, the extra sand sessions and the months of running all coming together for a great performance. We can all hang our Cross bikes up now and look to what the summer may bring.''

Toby was once again in Europe representing GB, this time at the first round of the U23 World Cup in the Czech Republic.

An extremely cold weekend meant for another very quick course, with numerous short climbs to test the riders top end power.

Toby spent much of the race battling out in a group fighting for top 5 placings, however slightly faded at the back end of the race to still finish an excellent 8th place, less than 90 seconds down on the leader; Thomas Mein. Toby once again finished 3rd British rider, cementing his position as one of the countries top cyclocross riders.

''We know from training and testing that the fast courses suit Toby best, where he's able to deliver his raw power and speed that he also shows on the road, so we knew that if things went well Toby could deliver another top result in Tabor. However, to place in the top 10 in his first U23 World Cup exceeded our expectations, and Toby is really seeing the return from all the countless hours he's spent devoted to cycling over the last year. It really is fantastic to see an athlete deliver what we know they are capable of doing so.''

u23 european champs

toby barnes - 13th

Sunday 8th November 2020

On Sunday, coached rider Toby Barnes took to the start line of the European U23 Championships in The Netherlands. This was Toby's first GB call up since riding as a Junior, showing the progress he had made over the past 12 months.

Toby battled hard on a relentlessly quick course against the best riders in Europe and finished in a valiant 13th position and 3rd Brit on the day behind Thomas Mein and Cameron Mason. This was a strong effort to kick-start his return to International racing and will hopefully be a sign of things to come.

''Making the GB team for this race was one of my key goals I discussed with Phill early on in the year and it was a great feeling to be on good form and deliver a strong result for the team.

''We've had a really good training block coming into this race and I felt like I was in the perfect shape to be battling with Europe's best.''

-Toby Barnes-

''We knew before the season started that Toby had progressed well over the Summer and would have a shot for International selection, so getting the call up was a real boost to morale and proved all the hard work was worth it. To top that off with such a strong race against such tough competition shows how Toby has not only matured physically, but also mentally, as racing for the first time at this level is a lot to take in.''

cyclocross national trophy - round 1

Sunday 4th November 2020

On Sunday, four coached riders took to the start line of the first round of the National Cyclocross Trophy at Westmoorland Showgrounds in Milnthorpe.

With a very different feel to the day due to Covid regulations with no pit crews and no spectators, tensions soon rose as all riders knew this had the potential to be the only round of the 2020/21 Series. Adding to the nerves was the fact the riders knew they would have to complete the race, the course being very muddy by the time the Senior race started, with only one bike change.

After a fast start, Toby found himself competing in a duel at the front of the race against Jenson Young, but was soon able to put in an attack that saw him gain a comfortable advantage, and from then on Toby was able to control his pace, and his gap to 2nd place, to the finish line, taking the first National Trophy win of his career and become leader of the Series.

Meanwhile, Alec Gregory was making his first appearance in the United Kingdom for his new team; GSC Blagnac, and was able to bring back some of his old Cyclocross form and place in 12th on the day, a strong start to his Senior CX career. Behind, Sam Morris put in his best every Trophy result with 14th whilst Pete Matthews settled into 24th after cramps had held him back.

''With no summer racing I was able to concentrate more on my cross season and I was really pleased for that to pay off with my best ever National Trophy result.''

-Sam Morris-

''It was great to have 4 riders on the start line of the National Trophy and we couldn't prouder of all the lads. To have three riders in the top 15 in possibly the biggest race of the cyclocross domestic calendar this season is a massive achievement and shows what a summer of hard work and dedication can bring. We hope to keep this form going into the rest of the winter and hope we get to show it off in more races.''
